About Us

We are a premiere tour guide for one of the most brutal and ferocious battles in the world–the Battle of Antietam that occurred during the American Civil War in northwest Maryland in 1862. Less than one year into the four-year struggle, powerful Northern and Southern armies converged 70 miles west of Washington, D.C. It was an epic fight, and you’ll learn in-depth history from our tour guides Harvey Appomattox and Deirdre Shiloh who will explain how the mighty opposing armies were destined to battle here.

Harvey Appomattox has been leading tours for the past twenty years with At the Front Tours, teaching thousands of students and adults about the individual stories that cumulatively make up the two armies’ intertwined conflict. He first studied at the local community college, the esteemed Folk Study Antietam Battle College and then continued to earn a Master’s in Civil War History from Washington & Lee University in Virginia. He can tell a story, alternating between tales of the battle’s brutality as well as tales directly excerpted from soldiers’ diaries pre- and post-battle, showcasing their expectations and experiences before and after the battle.

Dierdre Shiloh is a passionate tour guide who knows her history and knows how to convey epic historical events through compelling storytelling. Like Harvey, she’s been a tour guide with At The Front tours for many years, leading her first tour when she was just 20 years old. Civil War history is her passion, driven in part because she is the descendant of an ancestor who served in the Confederate Army at several battles, including Gettysburg, and survived. She will dazzle you with stories of the soldiers’ heroism and actions, Impressing upon you the scale of the deadliest battle on American soil.
